Garden Variety — A Mockumentary

Close-up of a glossy green leaf with water droplets scattered on its surface. The leafs texture is smooth and fresh, reflecting light softly. The background is out of focus, highlighting the leafs vibrant color and natural details.

Garden Variety is a mockumentary that sheds light on the dehumanizing effects of inspiration porn on people with disabilities. Davenport’s balcony garden is the subject of the short. Yet, editing cuts off most of what he has to say in favor of others expressing admiration for his hobby. One of the neighbors in the film proclaims that they have “no excuse” for not having a garden, suggesting that framing people with disabilities as solely inspirational is a method for able-bodied people to motivate themselves.
